Australia celebrates the achievement of Cadel Evans winning the Tour de France this year! And what an exciting Tour it was, possibly the most exhilarating in recent history because it was not a forgone conclusion, because the race was not dominated by one, because it was won in style in the race against the clock, the “Race of Truth”. Mia is possibly the only one who doesn’t get it but that’s ok because everybody is entitled to an opinion and I like when view points challenge. But why is she a minority in this? Why do so many people care about Cadel Evan’s win, even people who don’t ride bikes, hate cyclists or never heard of the Tour of France before?
Front page material or sports section? Australians love their sports heroes. So he gets paid to ride a bike. He only does what he loves doing anyway? Has he saved a life?
He just rode a bike very fast over a long distance. This obviously inspires thousands of Australians to ride their bikes faster and over longer distances than they ever imagined. Maybe creating awareness and some form of respect to share roads, saving one cyclist’s life by not being hit by the car. Maybe saving a life by someone getting active, changing their lifestyle, and so saving a life. Or hundreds!
Cause and effect!
He may not have saved a life in the sense your question intended, Mia, but more importantly he has changed how Australians view the sport of cycling, which may influence how they will regard cyclists in future and that alone deserves National Hero status – Front Page!
How many people have you inspired today, Mia?
